Reflection 3 Assignment 1: Web Searching

One of our first assignments for IT 648 was to create a web search. We used the search engine Steve Yen’s Ultimate Search Page to find five sources on telecommunications in education, we searched for two college classmates, an author of a book, a business and two software programs providing a few specific results. Before turning in the project, we had to type all of our results in a single word document and e-mail them as an attachment.

Google has always been one of my favorite search engines. The best thing about this project for me was that I discovered that there are more resources available than just Google.

This week we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of web-based learning. I think this type of instruction provides an endless amount of resources, assessments, notes, planners, and discussions. It allows students to meet and communicate with people all around the world. Also, it provides more interaction between the student and the curriculum. Not to mention, it saves time, paper, and provides enrichments as well as remediation. Students can study a lesson over and over if needed and work at their own pace. While there are a few disadvantages like not having DSL or not being internet “savvy,” the future technology enhancements will make these obstacles seem easily accessible.
